ACNE

Acne or pimples are very a common skin problem now days and often seen in youngsters during teenage and youth years. Acne causes due to the hormonal action (Androgen)on the oil glands (sebaceous) in the skin. Oil glands openings get blocked by dust or some other infections and hence they are not able to secrete the oil (sebum). This causes Propionibacterium Acnes to grow and form acne, commonly known as pimple.

 

Acne or pimples mainly occurs on the face, chest, back, shoulders and neck. Acne is most common skin conditions in age 14 to 25, specially in young girls due to hormonal changes, though it is not a serious threat to the health, but these acne can cause scarring and disfigurement of the face.

 

Different types of lesion in Acne:

 

 

  • Papules are very small, pinks bumps acne which are painful to touch as inflamed.

  • Pustules are also known as pimples, base is reddish and filled with pus.

  • Nodules are large, hard and painful acne. Hot, red with deep base in skin.

  • White heads and black heads also known as comedones are form of acne with white or black pin pointed bumps on skin.

We can classify acne into following forms, based upon their cause and appearance: Acne vulgaris is the form of 'teenage spots' is very common in adolescence but other rarer forms of acne may occur. Severe forms of acne can affect many aspects of a person's life, causing a great deal of embarrassment and stress. Severe acne may significantly limit social life and even interfere with opportunities for employment.

 

Rarer variants of Acne/Pimples:

 

 

  • Acne conglobata : A type of nodulocystic acne with inflamed lesions that run together and often bleed. This type of Acne may leads to extensive scarring.

  • Acne fulminans: are sudden, severe inflammation leads to deep erosions; sometimes occurs with fever and joint pains.

  • Acne excoriee : are common in young girls, characterized by self-inflicted wounds associated with a psychological or emotional problem.

  • Acne mechanica : is caused by pressure, friction or rubbing from clothing.

  • Acne cosmetic: is caused by contact comedogenic products with the skin. .

  • Chloracne: is caused by occupational exposure or military exposure to halogenated hydrocarbons.
